2010 Railway Stakes Results – Gathering Beats Famous Roman & Megatic

November 22nd, 2010

On Saturday the John Thompson-trained Gathering gave Patinack Farm Racing a well-deserved Group 1 win this season, claiming victory in the 2010 Railway Stakes at Ascot Racecourse.

Patinack Farm had earlier scored a succession of five frustrating Group 1 second placings throughout the season including Trusting in the George Main Stakes and the Epsom Handicap.

But on Saturday the operation got the gory as four-year-old Tale Of The Cat gelding Gathering lead all the way to claim a comprehensive win in the $1 million Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m), Perth’s richest thoroughbred showdown.

Gathering ($12), ridden beautifully by Craig Williams, was never challenged storming out of barrier six to lead the entire mile and finish two and a quarter lengths ahead of Jim Taylor’s gallant six-year-old Famous Roman ($5.50) with Megatic ($26) just a quarter length further away again for third.

Colour Correct, the clear $4 favourite started strong but faded to finish 11th over six lengths away from the winner, while defending champion Sniper’s Bullet was further back again finishing 13th.

Thompson’s other runner Trusting was not disgraced finishing sixth while Grand Nirvana finished fourth for a second year in a row.

Gathering has now won four of his 20 career starts for $986,275 in prize money and will next contest the $500,000 Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) on December 4, attempting to emulate the achievement of Sniper’s Bullet 12 months ago who took out the Railway Stakes / Kingston Town double.

Luxbet now have Gathering as the second favourite in their early Kingston Town Classic odds, so get in on the action today by opening an account with this leading online bookmaker!
