The Cleaner to Contest 2014 Railway Stakes

Undoubtedly returning to racing in career-best form this season, Tasmanian trainer Mick Burles has revealed classy front runner The Cleaner will travel to Perth to complete his Spring Racing Carnival swansong in the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) on November 22nd.

Securing a commendable race record of 18 wins and a further 13 minor places from hi 45 competitive appearances on course so far, The Cleaner ran a brave ninth amongst talented company in the major Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) on October 25th; responding particularly well at Flemington last weekend when maintaining a strong sprint for third in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m).

Understandably thrilled with the Savoire Vivre gelding’s form over recent months, Burles told AAP he had earmarked a return to the paddock for The Cleaner following the Emirates Stakes, however connections’ desire for one final tilt at the highest level of Australian racing this time in swayed his opinion.

“While I was content for the horse to have a break the owners have preferred we push on to Perth for the Railway Stakes so that’s now the plan,” Burles said.

Laying his claims as one of watch over spring through a strong and consistent summer and autumn preparations in late 2013/early 2014, The Cleaner finished third in the Listed Newmarket Handicap (1200m) first-up in late November and continued to impress via three consecutive second place finishes in minor staying events and a strong victory in the Listed George Adams Plate (1600m) on February 26th.

Finishing a close second to Limes in VRC-CRV Winter Championship Open (1400m) first-up this time, the gelding out of Dash Of Scotch won the Travis Harrison Cup (1600m) on June 21st and continued to build towards back-to-back victories in the Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) and Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m) leading into the Cox Plate.
