While ruled out of contention for the Perth feature race on Monday by trainer Darren Weir, a berth in the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) at Ascot Racecourse on November 22nd now appears on the cards for classy miler Lucky Hussler after connections opted to pay a late nomination fee on Monday.
Failing to finish outside the places over five starts this time in, Lucky Hussler won the Group 3 Moonga Stakes (1400m) by close to four lengths on October 18th before finishing a close second to Hucklebuck in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) at Flemington last weekend.
Understandably thrilled with the form and class displayed by the Husson gelding over the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival, managing owner Glenn Makauskas is confident the Railway Stakes figures as a very winnable race for Lucky Hussler, and is excited by the prospect of a maiden victory at the highest level of Australian racing.
“The horse had a very hard track (on Saturday), he has jarred up a bit and we’re going to see how he goes, if he’s not 100 per cent we’ll pull him out but we’d love to go to Perth and have a look,” Makauskas told Racing Victoria.
“We think it’s a very winnable race for Lucky but in saying that the horse comes first, we’ll see how the next few days unfold; the wellbeing of the horse is paramount and we don’t want to jeopardise his future.”
Yet to be completed sold on the idea, Weir is more than happy to target the Railway Stakes with Lucky Hussler, but revealed the five-year-old is yet to completely recover from his Emirates Stakes appearance.
“He pulled up a bit jarry so he’ll have to improve significantly over the next few days,” Weir said.
“The owners are keen to run him but we’ll just have to see how he goes.”
Securing a commendable race record of five wins and a further seven minor places from his 25 competitive appearances on course to date, Lucky Hussler was unable to make an impact over three disappointing starts in late autumn and winter this year; returning to the paddock after failing to beat a single runner home in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) on June 7th.
Yet to be confirmed for a berth, Lucky Hussler is currently featured as outright second favourite in early Railway Stakes betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au and can be taken at a generous quote of $6 for success.
