The Cleaner Back on Track for 2014 Railway Stakes

November 18th, 2014

Having reportedly received less-than ideal treatment in transit from the east coast to Perth, trainer Mick Burles has confirmed classy runner The Cleaner has returned to great condition ahead of Saturday’s featured Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) at Ascot Racecourse.

A standout performer for the Tasmanian trainer over the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival, The Cleaner followed up a brave run in the featured Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) on October 25th with an impressive performance for third in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) on November 6th, stamping his claims as a favourite for success in the 2014 Railway Stakes.

Understandably displeased with The Cleaner’s trip to Perth, Burles said the seven-year-old has taken well to his time abroad since arriving and is confident of a successful performance from barrier 8 on Saturday.

“They came and picked him up at 5.45am and the plane left at 10.45am,” Burles told Racing Victoria.

“He was on the bloody truck for three hours before they loaded him – they just left him in there, there was no room to take him out of the float while he waited; it wasn’t good for him at all.

“They tell me he’s got to draw in the first six or he has no hope, but they don’t know The Cleaner, they don’t know what he’s like.

“All I want is a Group 1 against his name, no worry about my pockets or the owner’s pockets, I just want him to have a Group 1. He deserves it.”

Finishing second in the VRC-CRV Winter Championship Open (1400m) first-up on May 24th, The Cleaner continued to impress in winning the Travis Harrison Cup (1600m) and running second in the Listed VRC-CRV Winter Championship Final (1600m) on July 12th before returning to the winner’s circle in a minor over 1600m on August 2nd.

Gaining ballot-free entry to the Cox Plate when leading from start to finish to secure undoubtedly his most impressive race win so far in the Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) on September 6th, the Savoire Vivre gelding charged home to win the Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m) on September 26th but was unable to match the late pace of classy colt Adelaide when ninth in his major season target.

Confirmed to be partnered by regular jockey Steven Arnold, The Cleaner is currently rated at $4.40 chance for success in the 2014 Railway Stakes; registering as sole occupant of the top line of betting at
