Elite Belle Takes Out 2014 Railway Stakes

November 24th, 2014

Classy Perth miler Elite Belle has chalked one up for the locals at Ascot Racecourse, displaying an exceptional turn of foot late to take out the featured Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) by a comfortable length.

Jumping from the gates only fairly, leading jockey William Pike was forced to settle Elite Belle towards the tail of the pack, allowing early leader and outright favourite The Cleaner to set a notably quick tempo away from the barriers and rounding the bend.

Finding the final straight blocked for a run and with plenty to do, the Canny Lad mare appeared to have too much to do too late, but found a clear line between runners and exploded from the pack; finding the fore of the pack with 200m to run and hitting the line ahead of Balmont Girl; Moriarty boxing on for third.

Trainer Grant Williams was thrilled with Elite Belle’s 2014 Railway Stakes win and was quick to lay the praise on what he deemed a race-winning ride from Pike.

“He is the best over here for a reason and everybody knows that we call him the wizard for a reason,” Pike said.

“Good jockeys win big races and that was one of the best.

“He just gets the best out of them, he balances them up and she has a good kick.

“I’ll be honest, I started to watch Respondent and I thought that we had too many horses to get through and through the corner of my eye I saw a horse coming through and I went ‘that couldn’t be Willy could it’ and it was and I couldn’t believe it.

“This is by far the biggest thing I have ever done and it is just amazing.”

Pike delivered an exceptional ride on Elite Belle for victory in the 2014 Railway Stakes and was quick to credit his classy partner’s performance in securing a maiden victory at the highest level of Australian racing.

“It feels great,” Pike said.

“I actually had a great run; she began well and I was just able to switch across behind heels and found myself on the fence and I had a great run in transit.

“I started having to navigate traffic coming up to the 600 and I saw my opening.

“Fuchsia Bandana kicked and that presented me with an opening and this little horse has a great kick on her.

“She doesn’t even travel, she does it from off the bit and you just have to trust that she has got it and she has never let us down.

“When she lets down it is electric and it is the greatest feeling.”
